چکیده

This paper looks into the problem of localization of an acoustic source in shallow sea with a sloping bottom as found in the continental shelf area. A vertical array of sensors, either floating or secured to the sea bottom, is used to receive the acoustic signals from the source Including those travelling by different paths. First, a spectral matrix of the array signal is computed and it is then subjected to eigenvalue decomposition. The space spanned by the eigenvectors is partitioned into two subspaces, namely, a signal subspace spanned by the eigenvector corresponding to largest eigenvalues and a noise subspace spanned by the eigenvectors corresponding to repeated eigenvalues. The signal subspace is also spanned by a linear combination of direction vectors corresponding to all multipaths These two subspaces are orthogonal. We exploit this property of orthogonality in the estimation of range, bearing and depth of a source. Some of the significant findings are as follows:( 1) Unlike in the flat bottom channel it is now possible to measure the bearing with respect to upslope or downslope direction.(2) The azimuth scan shows a sharp peak at the correct location for steep slope(>lo) (31 A study of finite data effect has shown that the background generally remains unchanged as the number of snapshots increases. However, the signal peak amplitude increases roughly at the rate of 3dB per doubling of the number of snapshots.

The impact of wind-generated bubble layer on matched field sound source localization in shallow water (Research Article)

This paper investigates the effect of the wind-generated bubble layer on the underwater sound source localization in the Persian Gulf shallow-water environment through computer simulation and the matched field processing technique. An underwater sound source of 2-10 kHz located at depths of 10, 45, and 75 m was considered at a distance of 4 km from a linear vertical receiver array. The estimati...

Hull Performance Assessment and Comparison of Ship-Shaped and Cylindrical FPSOs With Regards To: Stability, Sea-Keeping, Mooring and Riser Loads In Shallow Water

Floating, Production, Storage and Offloading “FPSO” have become a popular choice since 1980s for marginal and fast-track developments where subsea pipeline is not an economic or feasible solution for export. Field development usually starts with a concept selection procedure which is constituted from a sequence of multi-disciplinary decision making tasks. As limited data is availabl...

The Pattern of Caspian Sea Water Penetration Into Anzali Wetland: Introduction of a Salt Wedge

Measuring salinity of water at different depths along six transacts at the mouth of the wetland and along five tributaries connecting the wetland to the sea the extent of Caspian Sea penetration into Anzali Wetland was determined. The results demonstrated a depth-dependent salinity gradient extending up to 10 kilometres into the wetland. A pattern of saltwater and freshwater interface is presen...

Sound Source Localization in a Multipath Environment Using Convolutional Neural Networks

The propagation of sound in a shallow water environment is characterized by boundary reflections from the sea surface and sea floor. These reflections result in multiple (indirect) sound propagation paths, which can degrade the performance of passive sound source localization methods. This paper proposes the use of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for the localization of sources of broadban...

Source Depth Estimation Using a Horizontal Array by Matched-Mode Processing in the Frequency-Wavenumber Domain

In shallow water environments, matched-field processing (MFP) and matched-mode processing (MMP) are proven techniques for doing source localization. In these environments, the acoustic field propagates at long range as depth-dependent modes. Given a knowledge of the modes, it is possible to estimate source depth. In MMP, the pressure field is typically sampled over depth with a vertical line ar...
